Approximately 70 cars were on exhibition at Christian Health Care Center’s Second Family Fun Night and Classic Car Show.

A record 400 people attended Christian Health Care Center’s (CHCC) Second Annual Family Fun Night and Classic Car Show held Friday, August 14, 2015. On the beautiful summer evening, families, children, community members, and CHCC resident, staff, and trustees enjoyed the exhibition of 71 classic cars, entertainment, food, games, and prizes.

“We welcome our community and car enthusiasts to our campus to enjoy a fun summer evening and learn a bit about Christian Health Care Center,” said Douglas A. Struyk, CPA, LNHA, CHCC President and CEO.

Capturing first place for the People’s Choice Award was a 1955 Chevy convertible owned by Bob and Edith Skudera of Midland Park. Second place went to a 1966 Ford pickup owned by Mark Goodell of Waldwick, and third place went to a 1950 Mercury owned by Gene Hoogerhyde of Hawthorne.

Mr. Goodell’s entry was especially poignant because he originally bought the carwith his son Christopher, a Waldwick police officer who was tragically killed last year in the line of duty.

“We had started working on the car before Christopher went into the Marines after 9-11. It was down to the frame,” Mr. Goodell said. “I decided to complete the restoration after Christopher’s death and take it to local car shows and parades. It’s my way of honoring my son.”

Also among the cars on display was a 1957 Dykhouse Construction Co. pick-up truck owned by Larry D. Dykhouse Sr. of Midland Park, son of Garry Dykhouse of Wyckoff, former Chair of both the CHCC and CHCC Foundation boards of trustees. “The truck was originally bought by my grandfather, Henry Dykhouse, for his landscaping company,” Larry said. “It became mine when I turned 17.”

The event also featured 14 cars in the All American Corvette Club and National Glass Corvette Association.

“Our clubs are charity-driven,” said Ron Bartole of Fair Lawn, All American Corvette Club Secretary. “We are dedicated to giving back to the community. It’s great to be here not only for the enjoyment of the community, but also for the enjoyment of Christian Health Care Center’s residents.”

Mr. Bartole credits the late Rev. David P. Krentel with encouraging the clubs to participate in CHCC’s car show. They met at another show two years ago, at which point Rev. Krentel, who joined CHCC in 2004 as the Foundation Executive Director until his passing in January of this year, discussed the possibility of organizing the Center’s first Family Fun Night and Classic Car Show. Rev. Krentel will be honored posthumously with the David F. Bolger Award for Service and Leadership during CHCC’s A Celebration of Excellence Wednesday, October 28, 2015, at the Venetian in Garfield. Douglas H. Dittrick will be honored as well.
