Christian Health Care Center Holds Special Event to Help Escape the Winter Blues

New Jersey residents certainly had enough of this winter and welcomed spring with open arms. Christian Health Care Center (CHCC) in Wyckoff recently held special events called “I wish it was summer” for winter-weary staff, residents, and clients. A special picnic-style meal consisting of summer barbecue fare including Cajun blackened chicken, homemade red potato salad, freshly baked biscuits, corn on the cob, and assorted sorbets, was served for employees. CHCC residents and patients also enjoyed a special picnic-style lunch.

“It was a challenging winter and some days it felt like it would never end.  It was fun for our staff, volunteers and those we serve to take a break and look forward to warmer times ahead,” said Douglas A. Struyk, CPA, LNHA, CHCC President and CEO.

Christian Health Care Adult Day Services of Wyckoff made the event a two-day celebration. They decorated one room in a beach theme and another as the New Jersey boardwalk. Clients enjoyed playing a number of games, including ring toss and duck pond, and won tickets that were used to buy prizes from a prize table, as well as prizes hanging from the ceiling. In the afternoon, clients feasted on popcorn, cotton candy, and root beer floats. Staff wore “CHCC Boardwalk Staff” T-shirts and ran game booths, handed out tickets, worked the popcorn machine, and various other boardwalk duties.

“The clients had a ball,” said MJ Paulison, Christian Health Care Adult Day Services Assistant Administrator/Activities Director. “They all said that it had been years since they had been to the shore and they really felt like they were there, and that it was summer! Staff and clients had such a great time at this event, and it was a real boost during this long cold winter. We dressed in summer clothing and were able to spend two days ‘down the shore’ in the middle of March!”
