About Southgate
Southgate is a special-care nursing facility
offering short-term behavior-management treatment for adults with
behavioral problems. Designed to provide residents with the most
clinically effective, cost-effective treatment in the least restrictive
manner, Southgate is a specialized 40-bed long-term care facility
with an average length-of-stay of six to 18 months. The qualified
staff of professionals has expertise in behavior management, psychiatry,
psychology, nursing, activity therapy, and social services. Southgate is licensed
by the State of New Jersey and is an approved Medicaid facility. Behavior management modifies
the severe behavioral disturbances of some forms of dementia and
cognitive disorders, such as combative, disruptive, and disturbing
conduct. Common behavioral disturbances associated with dementia
and similar conditions include:
Southgate's therapeutic
activity programs meet the needs of residents in an environment
that is stimulating and social, as well as helpful in decreasing
socially inappropriate behavior. Among the programs is Snoezelen
therapy, which relaxes, calms, and provides a soothing, tranquil
environment. It increases a person's awareness of self, others,
and the environment through light, sound, and aromatherapy. Special services include
on-site pre-screening by clinical professionals. Cognitive behavior
therapy and pharmacological behavior management are conducted under
the direction of a staff psychiatrist and psychologist. Southgate also provides
a family support group with follow-up training, discharge planning,

all our programs and facilities at Christian Health Care Center
(CHCC), we meet the needs of the elderly with care, compassion and
commitment. In addition to Southgate, other elder-care options available
include Heritage Manor Nursing Home, The Longview Assisted Living
Residence, Hillcrest Residence, Evergreen Court, and Christian Health
Care Adult Day Services. CHCC is a non-profit organization open to
anyone regardless of race, sex, or religion.
